We recall U.S. Army Private First Class (PFC) William H. Thompson of Brooklyn, New York.
PFC Thompson displayed extraordinary heroism while serving in the U.S. 24th Infantry Regiment, an all African-American unit, battling North Koreans in the Pusan Perimeter on August 6, 1950.
A North Korean combat unit of overwhelming numbers launched a surprise attack on PFC Thompson's unit. So, Thompson set up his machine gun in the direct path of the enemy and pinned them down long enough for his platoon to withdraw to a better fighting position. Despite sustaining wounds from grenade fragments and small arms fire and being urged to retreat by his platoon mates, Thompson continued to lay down accurate suppressive fire to protect his platoon until he was killed by an enemy grenade.
For protecting his unit, from more casualties, by providing cover fire and risking his life above and beyond the call of duty, Private First Class Thompson received the Medal of Honor posthumously.
