Ford's wingman, childhood buddy, Ken Webb relayed Ford's heroic actions and quote to his family:
CDR Ford saw enemy search lights coming towards him from all directions, so Webb told him to send up a flare for the rescue helicopter. CDR Ford refused to pop smoke because he "did not want to be responsible for somebody else not getting home."
For this act of courage and humility, CDR Ford was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Valor

In Massachusetts, the US and Commonwealth (State) Flags are flying at half-staff today, Aug 2 - the day of interment/burial, in honor of Technical Sergeant John F. Brady. Sergeant Brady was killed in action on November 2, 1944 when his B-17 was shot down by German fighter pilots over Merseburg, Germany.
