Women to Honor Wednesday
Helen Keller was born on this date, June 27, of 1880 in Tuscambia, Alabama, So, For this 'Women to Honor Wednesday,' we pay tribute to the long and admirable life of Helen Kelller (she lived to be 87 years old).
Helen Keller proved that will and determination one can overcome some incredible obstacles. At 19 months old, she got an illness that made her deaf and blind. With the help of her teacher, Anne Sullivan, she learned to communicate using gestures and hand movements at first. Amazingly, she went on to become an American author and lecturer. Yes, that's right, she learned to speak and was the first deaf-blind person to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Her inspirational legacy lives on by showing that a fighting spirit can overcome nearly impossible odds. And, one of her most powerful quotes reinforces her wisdom:
“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched – they must be felt with the heart.”
