by relaying lessons from the War of 1812:
On this date, June 18th, in 1812, the War of 1812 officially began. The war, which lasted approximately 2 years, was between the US and the British and was marked by such historical events (some pictured above):
-The British burning of Washington DC in 1814, including the White House
-The Battle of Queenston Heights, the war's first battle in Canada
-USS Constitution (Old Ironsides) defeating a number of British ships
-Andrew Jackson leading US Army to victory in New Orleans
-and the Battle of Fort McHenry, where the Star-Spangled Banner was born and written ;)
Because of the British and overall European focus on defeating Napoleon, the British employed a defensive strategy during the War of 1812 - also known as "Mr. Madison's War" (because James Madison was President at the time and he pushed Congress for and made the declaration of war). And, that defensive strategy worked for a bit - until the US got aggressive on land and sea and closed out the British at the Battle of New Orleans.
Military Monday's Thought-provoking Quote:
"Every good citizen makes his country's honor his own, and cherishes it not only as precious but as sacred. He is willing to risk his life in its defense and is conscious that he gains protection while he gives it."
- Andrew Jackson
