Women to Honor Wednesday
On 'Women to Honor Wednesday,' we pay tribute to Jeanette Rankin - America's first Congresswoman. In 1916, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives by the state of Montana. During this term, she helped draft and push through legislation that became part of the 19th Amendment - securing women the right to vote. Her view of voting equality is echoed by these 2 famous quotes from her:
"Men and women are like right and left hands; it doesn't make sense not to use both."
and "We're half the people; we should be half the Congress."
During her 6 decade career in activism and politics, she championed many gender equality and civil rights acts.
