Women to Honor Wednesday
On this 'Women to Honor Wednesday,' we commemorate the first "First Lady," who died on May 22 in 1802 at age 70. As the wife of America's first President, she superbly managed the business affairs of two plantations while George Washington was away fighting the Revolutionary War.
She also made frequent visits to check on George between battles and ensured local women were helping provide food, clothes, and other supplies to the Colonial Army. The term, "First Lady," was not invented until after her time as the President's wife, so she was called "Lady Washington" during that period.
Martha was known to carry herself with class, and this quote revealed why: "I am determined to be cheerful and happy in whatever situation I may find myself. For I have learned that the greater part of our misery or unhappiness is determined not by our circumstance but by our disposition."
