Flag Steward - Honors and Awakens Our Flag to Inform and Inspire Patriotic Citizens
with today's 'Military Monday' memory honoring The Peacemakers meeting to end the Civil War
On this 'Military Monday', we recall "The Peacemakers" meeting on March 27 & 28 in 1865. President Abraham Lincoln met his two leading Union generals, for the first time all together near Grant's City Point, Virginia headquarters, to make plans to end the Civil War. General Ulysses S. Grant and General William T. Sherman discussed their strategy aboard the president's steamship - commanded by Admiral Porter. Grant was preparing to attack and end a 10-month stalemate with Confederate General Robert E. Lee's forces around Petersburg and Richmond, Virginia - which became known as the Appomattox Campaign. Sherman had scorched much of the South while leading his Union Army in a 'March to the Sea' from Atlanta to the Atlantic and was now moving north to surround the Confederates in the Carolinas. Just 4 weeks after this strategy session, the General Lee surrendered and effectively ended the Civil War.
And, today's #MilitaryMonday quote ...
... reminds us of the importance of the end of the American Civil and the Reconstruction Era - ensuring the United States of America continued towards fulfilling its promise of 'Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.'
