Flag Steward - Honors and Awakens Our Flag to Inform and Inspire Patriotic Citizens
On March 9, 1862, the USS Monitor and USS Virginia fought to a draw during the Civil War. This battle between two "ironclads" (metal-covered ships) became one of the most famous naval battles in American history. Both sides learned valuable lessons from this fight as armor plates on the ships easily turned away gun and cannon shots. This battle also marked the beginning of a new style of ship - the steam-powered iron (metal) ships and new weapons and ammo to penetrate their armor.
