On this 'Women to Honor Wednesday', during this 'Women's History Month,' we recall the achievements of ...
... Amelia Earhart ...
Amelia was, and still is, one of the world's most famous pilots. She cemented her fame on January 11, 1935, by becoming the first to fly from Hawaii to California. Her flight lasted an exhausting 18 hours - compared to the 5 hours it takes with today's jets. Three years before this trans-Pacific first, Amelia was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.
Amelia was also a civil rights activist. She displayed bravery, smarts, and independence by excelling at the same aviation firsts as men. Two years after her Hawaii flight, Amelia attempted to fly around the world. Unfortunately, she and her plane went missing on July 2, 1937 near New Guinea in the South Pacific. She was about three quarters of the way around the world at the time of this flight failure. For years and years, there have been adventurers and speculators who've tried to find her plane and solve this mystery. All of this interest over the years has only strengthened her pioneering fame and ignited passion for aviation in many more women and men.
For this "End of Watch Wednesday," We Honor:
