[ President John F. Kennedy meets with Peace Corps volunteers in August 1961 = public domain image ]

On this date, March 1, 1961, President Kennedy issued an executive order establishing the Peace Corps.  The Peace Corps, an army of goodness, would be made up of civilian volunteers who travel to underdeveloped countries to help them improve their living and working conditions.
About the Peace Corps, JFK stated, that underdeveloped countries are “struggling for economic and social progress.” “Our own freedom and the future of freedom around the world, depend, in a very real sense, on their ability to build growing and independent nations where men can live in dignity, liberated from the bonds of hunger, ignorance, and poverty.”
In the 1960s and 70s, the Peace Corps quickly proved its worth.  Peace Corps volunteers in Africa, Asia, Middle East and Latin America built water systems, built and taught at schools, improved agricultural practices, and lots of other projects that boosted underdeveloped nations living conditions.
And, today's 'Slice of Americana' serves up ...
The birth of college basketball coaching legend - Dean Smith.  He was born on February 28th, 1931 in Kansas.  He retired from college basketball coaching in 1997 as the winningest coach ever, with 879 wins.  His most famous days were at the University of North Carolina - where his teams won 2 national championships, made the Final Four 11 times, and included stars like Michael Jordan, James Worthy, and Vince Carter.
