Strengthening Our Future by Honoring Our Past
Reminders from Our Flag
for Wednesday, February 14, 2018
- a 'Women to Honor Wednesday'
[Note:  Play this patriotic music in the background to enhance the experience]

[We recommend you designate each Friday as #FlagDayFriday - a day to take a moment and be thankful for all America offers by performing a pre-Pledge Ceremony.  But, if #FlagDayFriday doesn't fit within your morning schedule, you're welcome to GO HERE to perform this week's Pre-Pledge Ceremony on any day of the week.]

Across the USA, Our Flag flies at full staff, except in VA and MN.

In Minnesota, from sunrise until sunset, on Wednesday, February 14, 2018, Our Flags are flying at half-staff to honor and remembrance of Colonel Leo Thorsness.  Col. Thorsness was born on February 14, 1932 in Walnut Grove, Minnesota. As an active duty fighter pilot during the Vietnam War, he was awarded the United States' highest distinction for valor in action, the Congressional Medal of Honor.

[Note: State half-staff in Virginia:  VA's governor has ordered that the flag of the Commonwealth of Virginia is to be flown at half-staff over the State Capitol and throughout Virginia in respect and memory of Civil Rights leader Reverend Dr. Wyatt Tee Walker from Wednesday, February 14, 2018 to sunset on Saturday, February 17, 2018.]

The Beacon of Honor - Awakens Our Flag to Inform and Inspire Patriotic Citizens

On this 'Women to Honor Wednesday' of 'African American History Month,' we recall ...
... a historical movie that was released last February.  'Hidden Figures' celebrated 3 brilliant African American women who served as 'human computers' for NASA back in the 1950s and 60s.  Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Dorothy Vaughan helped turn around some troubled NASA space missions by using their smarts and leadership skills in the face of serious discriminatory conditions.   NASA, like most big, corporate American companies back then, was a white and male-dominated.  But, Mary, Katherine, and Dorothy turned doubters into believers by helping to make what seemed to be impossible, man walking on the moon, a reality in 1969.
Picture
Dorothy Vaughan was the first African American female supervisor in NASA history

Picture
Mary Jackson was NASA's first black female engineer - a job that required lots of, what we call today, STEM skills

Picture
Katherine Johnson was the first woman, yes, first woman, in NASA history to co-author a flight research report.
In fact, John Glenn, the first American astronaut to orbit (go around the Earth), specifically asked for Katherine to check the NASA computer's math to ensure his flight path calculations were correct.
