In Colorado, sadly, yet another deputy has been slain - the 3rd killed in 5 weeks.  So, the Governor of Colorado has called for half-staff of Our Flags from sunrise on Tuesday, February 6, until sunset on the day of the funeral, Saturday, February 10th, to honor El Paso County Sheriff’s Deputy Micah Flick.  Flick, 34, was killed while responding to a motor vehicle theft. Two other deputies, a Colorado Springs police officer and a civilian were injured in the shooting. Flick served the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office for 11 years.  He is survived by his wife and 7-year-old twins.

During this week in 1943, the Battle of Guadalcanal ended.  This World War II conflict in the Pacific lasted 6 months.  2,000 American GIs and 9,000 Japanese soldiers were killed during this long battle.
As part of this February's African Americans in Times of War tribute, we recall
93rd Infantry Division's arrival on Guadalcanal.  This U.S. Army division, of 16,000, was the first African American to see action in World War II.  They served mainly as construction units, building the airfields that would enable America to devastatingly bomb Japanese held islands, and they conducted defensive and security operations.

And, today's 'Slice of Americana' serves up ...

During this week in 1900, the Davis Cup, a solid silver trophy, was created by Dwight Davis to challenge British tennis players to a team tennis competition.  Arthur Ashe, the African American tennis legend we highlighted earlier this week, was a Davis Cup hero in the 1960s and 70s.
