75 years ago, on February 2nd, 1943, the USS Dorchester, a troop ship, was torpedoed, by a German U-boat, and sunk off the coast of Greenland.
675 of the 904 aboard died in the frigid north Atlantic waters.  This ship sinking became renowned
because of the selfless sacrifice by four Army chaplains, known as the "Immortal Four Chaplains," who gave away their life jackets to save others before they died.
Fourteen years later, in 1957, the US Congress set-up a national observance for this tragedy to honor the 4 chaplains of different religious faiths who put others' lives before their own.  T
he heroic actions of Lt. George L. Fox, Methodist; Lt. Alexander D. Goode, Jewish; Lt. John P. Washington, Catholic; and Lt. Clark V. Poling, Dutch Reformed will  never be forgotten. As the ship was sinking, the 4 chaplains calmed soldier fears and handed out lifejackets. When they ran out of lifejackets they gave them to soldiers in need.  The four chaplains went down with the ship, arm-in-arm in prayer.
