Strengthening Our Future by Honoring Our Past
Reminders from Our Flag
for Saturday, February 3, 2018
... a Saturday Replay Day ...
[Note:  Play this patriotic music in the background to enhance the experience]

Across the USA, Our Flag flies at full staff - except in Minnesota.

In Minnesota, in observance of the 75th Anniversary of the tragic sinking of the United States Army transport Dorchester off the coast of Greenland, Governor Mark Dayton has directed all U.S. Minnesota flags to be flown at half-staff at all state buildings in the State of Minnesota, from sunrise until sunset on Saturday, February 3, 2018.
In 1957, the U.S. Congress established national observance of the tragedies anniversary to honor the four chaplains of different faiths whose heroic and selfless acts that day saved the lives of many men. The Governor's proclamation notes that Immortal Four Chaplains Day encourages all Minnesotans to express "compassion for those of different races or faiths."

More of the story about the Immortal Four Chaplains will be shared in tomorrow's / Sunday's 'Reminders from Our Flag.'

On this 'Women to Honor Wednesday,' we recall ...
... America's first female physician (medical doctor), Elizabeth Blackwell.  She was born, February 3, 1821 in England.  After all 150 admitted male medical students unanimously approved her to attend (which was a stipulation for her admission), Elizabeth studied medicine at Geneva Medical College (which later became Hobart College) and received her medical degree on January 23, 1849.  During this graduation ceremony the Dean stood up and bowed to her.   While treating an infant for an infection, she got the infection in her eye and had to have it removed.  This killed her dream of becoming a surgeon.  In NYC, she established the first hospital run by all-female staff, the New York Infirmary for Indigent Women and Children.  Elizabeth also oversaw nurse training during the American Civil War.
Overall, she broke down occupation and social barriers so women could pursue their healthcare industry dreams.

And, today's 'Slice of Americana' serves up ...

On January 31st in 1999, Cher sang the National Anthem at Super Bowl XXXIII in Miami.  Her singer and actress careers span 6 decades now.
And, the Denver Broncos defeated the Falcons to win their second consecutive Super Bowl that day.
