[ ... 'Gone with the Wind' ... ]
[ On this date, November 8th of 1900, Gone with the Wind author, Margaret Mitchell (1900-1949) was born in Atlanta, Georgia. Gone with the Wind, which became one of the most popular movies of all time, sold over 10M books and was translated into 30 languages. The book won a Pulitzer Prize in 1937. Margaret was struck by an automobile in Atlanta in 1949. This book and subsequent film may have been popular back in the day, but it must be noted that it presents and can cause racial tensions today because of its subject matter - the Civil War and Reconstruction periods. Rather than brush it away and censor the book and film, it is important that our younger generation see and witness our wrongs of the past. That will help us to go back to those ways and to see what progress we made towards 'liberty and justice for all.' Yet, we still have to acknowledge and educate our students that we still have lots of work to do to reach that ultimate American societal goal. ]
