On this date, October 27 of 1787, the first of 85 Federalist Papers was published in a New York City newspaper. The essays, by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay, were written to inform the states why they should ratify the U.S. Constitution. Their work paid off as the U.S. Constitution was ratified by enough states (11 of the 13) on June 21, 1788 and became the supreme law of our country on March 4, 1789.

20, of Pago Pago, American Samoa; assigned to A Company, 70th Engineer Battalion, 1st Armored Division, Fort Riley, Kan.; killed near the Khadra Police Station Oct. 27 when a vehicle containing an improvised explosive device detonated in downtown Baghdad.
