TODAY'S REMINDER FROM OUR FLAG:
... the King vs our Founding Fathers ...
... the King vs our Founding Fathers ...
On this date in 1775, King George III of Great Britain declared the American colonies in rebellion, and authorized a military response to quell the American Revolution.
And, then, exactly, a year later, on October 26, 1776, one of our Founding Fathers, Ben Franklin, set sail from America for France on a mission to seek French monetary and military support for the American Revolution. He stayed in France for the next 9 years - serving as America's ambassador to France. One of his most important efforts during that time was leading the American diplomats that negotiated and completed with the British the Treaty of Paris in 1783 - officially ending the Revolutionary War with Great Britain.

[ ... Passing the torch in American boxing ... ]
[ On October 26, 1951, an epic boxing battle was set as Rocky Marciano boxed Joe Louis at Madison Square Garden. It was a tale of the old champ, Joe Louis, versus the new, 10 years younger champ, Rocky Marciano. Joe Louis was favored, but Rocky Marciano outdueled him and won by TKO in the 8th of 15 potential rounds.

[ Here are the highlights of Joe Louis' fantastic boxing career:
Joseph Louis Barrow (May 13, 1914 – April 12, 1981), best known as Joe Louis and nicknamed the "Brown Bomber", was an American professional boxer who competed from 1934 to 1951. He reigned as the world heavyweight champion from 1937 to 1949, and is considered to be one of the greatest heavyweights of all time. Louis' championship reign lasted 140 consecutive months, during which he participated in 26 championship fights. The 27th fight, against Ezzard Charles in 1950, was a challenge for Charles' heavyweight title and so is not included in Louis' reign. Louis was victorious in 26 title defenses, a world record second only to Julio César Chávez with 27. In 2005, Louis was ranked as the best heavyweight of all time by the International Boxing Research Organization,[1] and was ranked number one on The Ring magazine's list of the "100 greatest punchers of all time".[2]
Louis' cultural impact was felt well outside the ring. He is widely regarded as the first African American to achieve the status of a nationwide hero within the United States, and was also a focal point of anti-Nazi sentiment leading up to and during World War II.[3] He was instrumental in integrating the game of golf, breaking the sport's color barrier in America by appearing under a sponsor's exemption in a PGA event in 1952.[4][5][6]
Detroit's Joe Louis Arena, former home of the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League, and the Forest Preserve District of Cook County's Joe Louis "The Champ" Golf Course, situated south of Chicago in Riverdale, Illinois, are named in his honor.
And, here is the recap of Rocky Marciano's boxing life:
Rocco Francis Marchegiano (September 1, 1923 – August 31, 1969), best known as Rocky Marciano, was an American professional boxer who competed from 1947 to 1955, and held the world heavyweight title from 1952 to 1956. He went undefeated in his career and defended the title six times, against Jersey Joe Walcott, Roland La Starza, Ezzard Charles (twice), Don Cockell and Archie Moore.
Known for his relentless fighting style, punching power, stamina and iron chin, Marciano has been included by boxing historians in lists of the greatest boxers of all time.[2] His knockout-to-win percentage of 87.75 remains one of the highest in heavyweight boxing history.
