On this date, October 20th, of 1944, General Douglas MacArthur set foot on Philippine soil.  He was fulfilling the promise he gave after escaping the Japanese invading the Philippine Islands back in 1942 - uttering the famous words "I shall return."

Army Staff Sgt. Paul J. Johnson
Died October 20, 2003 Serving During Operation Iraqi Freedom
29, of Calumet, Mich.; assigned to 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.; killed Oct. 20 while on mounted patrol when the vehicle in which he was riding hit an improvised explosive device and then came under small-arms fire by enemy forces in Fallujah, Iraq.

 [ On this date in 1977, 4 members of Lynyrd Skynyrd were killed in a plane crash in Mississippi. Obviously, the band was never able to perform at the level it had reached in the 70s.  Ever wonder about the origin of their name.  Interestingly, the group's name came from a mocking tribute to Leonard Skinner, the PE teacher of a band member who strictly enforced the school's policy against long hair. ]
