On this date, October 17th, in 1944, the Battle of Leyte Gulf began near the Philippine Islands.  It was the largest naval battle in history involving more than 300 U.S. warships and 67 Japanese ships and resulted in the destruction of the Japanese Navy including the Japanese Battleship Musashi, one of the largest ever built.
