On this date in 1822, the 19th President of the United States was born in Delaware, Ohio.  He served as a Union General during the Civil War and then President for one term from 1877 to 1881. During his presidency, he was challenged with trying to repair divisions left over from the Civil War and Reconstruction era.  He was best known for his quote: "He serves his party best who serves his country best.".
