... Happy birthday to our 39th President ...
On October 1, 1924, James Earl Carter Jr., President Jimmy Carter, was born in Plains, Georgia. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy during World War II and served as a nuclear submarine officer from 1946 to 1953. He served as our 39th President from 1977 to 1981. During his term he had to handle such issues as the 1979 energy crisis, the Three-Mile Island nuclear accident, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the boycott of the 1980 Olympics Summer Games in Moscow, and the Iran hostage crisis.
He has been very active during his post-presidency, particularly as the face of 'Habitat for Humanity.' In 2002, he was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for work "to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development" through The Carter Center.
