TODAY'S REMINDER FROM OUR FLAG:
... equal rights to an education ...
... equal rights to an education ...
On this date, September 30, 1962, with guards protecting him from the protesting and rioting, James Meredith was admitted to the University of Mississippi. Segregation of schools was the separation of white schools from minority, mostly black, schools. Meredith, an Air Force veteran looking to attain a higher education at a public school, showed his opposition to segregation of schools by enrolling himself in previous all-white University of Mississippi. He was inspired by President John F. Kennedy's inaugural address which highlighted the need for more equal civil rights for all Americans - especially African-Americans. Meredith exercised his constitutional right by applying to the University of Mississippi and did get the back of JFK's administration to enforce his civil rights and help admit him to the university.

... the Great Bambino ...
[ On this date in 1927, Babe Ruth, the Great Bambino, hit a home run in the final game of the season to give him a record 60 home runs. Upon setting the record, he apparently said, "Sixty! Let's see some SOB try to top that one!" That year, Ruth also, took a little time off to play himself in a silent movie. = public domain image ]
