On September 28, 1791, the Battle of Yorktown began at Yorktown, VA. American and French troops joined forces to fight the British at this pivotal battle. This was the last major clash of the Revolutionary War because British General Cornwallis surrendered his army to General George Washington.

Died September 28, 2004 Serving During Operation Iraqi Freedom
Sergeant Tyler Prewitt, 22, of Phoenix; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, Vilseck, Germany;
died Sept. 28 in Landstuhl, Germany, from injuries sustained Sept. 24 when a rocket-propelled grenade struck his vehicle in Baqubah, Iraq.
