TODAY'S REMINDER FROM OUR FLAG:
... O say can you see ...
On September 13, 1814, the Battle of Fort McHenry began between British ships in Baltimore Harbor and American forces on land - within Ft. McHenry. The battle was observed by Francis Scott Key from afar on a ship. He watched the British attack overnight and at dawn, on September 14, 1814, he saw the American flag still flying over the fort, inspiring him to write the verses of the "Defence of Ft. McHenry." This poem was then molded into the 'Star-Spangled Banner' lyrics and became the U.S. National Anthem in 1931.

[Serving up a slice of Americana]
[On this date in 1851, American Army physician Walter Reed (1851-1902) was born in Virginia. He served as an army surgeon for more than 20 years. The U.S. Army's best and most famous general hospital in Washington, D.C., is named in his honor. It is the site of where many of the seriously injured service members from the Global War on Terrorism are sent for healing.]
