TODAY'S REMINDER FROM OUR FLAG:
... it was the 31st state to join our Union ...
On September 9, 1850, California was admitted as our 31st state. It's name originated from the Baja California Peninsula of Mexico. During the Mexican-American War (1846 to 1848), U.S. military forces gained control of California.
Today, it is the most populated state, with more than 39 million residents, and it is the 3rd largest state by area. It's highest point is Mt. Whitney at 14,505 feet and lowest is Badwater Basin, amazingly 279 feet below sea level, in Death Valley.
