TODAY'S REMINDER FROM OUR FLAG:
On August 31, 1943, the U.S. Navy commissioned and launched the USS Harmon (DE-678), a Destroyer escort. It was named after the ship's Mess Attendant Leonard Roy Harmon, the first named after an African-American, who was presented with the Navy Cross (its 2nd highest aware for valor) posthumously, for his actions on the USS San Francisco during the Battle of Guadalcanal.

... about the world's entertainment inventor and leader]
[Thomas Edison added to his incredible collection of patents when he received a patent for the first movie projector on August 31, 1897.
Much of the credit for this invention, called the "Kinetoscope" should go to his employee W.K.L. Dickson. Regardless, this invention signaled the beginning of one of America's greatest industries and most important exported good - Hollywood TV shows and movies.]
