On this date, August 23rd, in 1970, Mexican-American labor union leader, César Chávez, began the Salad Bowl strike - the largest farm worker strike in U.S. history. Chávez's aggressive, but nonviolent, farm workers' boycotts caught national attention and led to an improvement of migrant farm worker's conditions.

Staff Sergeant Thornton, 35, of Rainbow City, Ala.; assigned to the 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas;
killed Aug. 23 when his patrol came under rocket-propelled grenade attack in Baghdad.
