On this date, August 17, of 1786, Davy Crockett was born in Limestone, North Carolina (now Tennessee). He was an American folk hero, known as the "King of the Wild Frontier." Crockett was also a politician who served in the U.S. House of Representatives as a delegate of Tennessee. This picture shows Crockett, the soldier, swinging his rifle at Mexican fighters overtaking the Alamo. He died defending the Alamo in 1836.

Specialist Brandon Titus, 20, of Boise, Idaho; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, N.Y.;
killed Aug. 17 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his checkpoint in Baghdad.

August 17 of 1907 the Pike Place Market opened in Seattle. Today this is Seattle's top attraction. Pike Place Market is a public market overlooking the Elliott Bay waterfront in Seattle.
