TODAY'S REMINDER FROM OUR FLAG:
... pursuing the American Dream - well kind of ;) ...
On this date, August 16, in 1896, gold was discovered along the Klondike River in Alaska. This started the Great Klondike Gold Rush. Pictured here are prospectors, in 1898, hiking over the Chilkoot Pass to get to the Klondike region. An estimated 100,000 prospectors migrated to the Klondike region after news of find gold reached Seattle and San Francisco - a year after it happened. This caused a 'stampede' of gold-seekers, most of whom returned by 1899 empty-handed.
