TODAY'S REMINDER FROM OUR FLAG:
... Victory!!! - Victory over Japan Day ...
V-J Day?
VJ-Day celebrations vary by countries. It was August 15, 1945 in Japan when they announced their surrender, but it was still August 14th in England and America. Great Britain celebrates V-J Day on August 15th and USA celebrates it on September 2nd.
Regardless, on this date August 14th (GMT), in 1945, Japan's Emperor Hirohito accepted the Allies surrender terms to avoid any further devastation to his country and loss of lives to bombings. Emperor Hirohito, who had never spoken on radio, recorded the announcement that Japan had surrendered, without actually stating that word, and broadcasted it across Japan. The Emperor sent a delegate to stand-in for him during the formal surrender ceremony aboard the USS Missouri on September 2, 1945 in Tokyo Bay.
