On this date, Aug 13th, in 1995, one of America's greatest baseball players succumbed to liver cancer -
Mickey Mantle. Mantle played his entire Major League Baseball career with the New York Yankees as a center fielder and first baseman, from 1951 through 1968. He is regarded by many as the greatest switch hitter in baseball history - a Triple Crown winner and clutch home run hitter in World Series games. [public domain image]

... the Wild West wasn't just for men ...
Today marks the birthdate of Wild West performer Annie Oakley. She was born, Phoebe Ann Mosey, in 1860 in Ohio. And, by age 15 she became known for her amazing shooting skills after beating traveling-show marksman and future husband Frank Butler. Annie Oakley and Frank joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West show in 1885. Annie was an international star attraction for 17 years - performing for royalty and heads of state in Europe.
