TODAY'S FLAG STATUS:
Across the USA, Our Flag flies at full staff, except in Texas - where it flies at half-staff to commemorate the life of former Governor Mark White, who served from 1983 to 1987.

TODAY'S REMINDER FROM OUR FLAG:
... overcome by the Great Depression ...
On this date, August 10th, in 1874, Herbert Clark Hoover was born in Iowa. He went on to become our 31st President from 1929 to 1933. As a former Secretary of Commerce, President Hoover leveraged his economic experience to try to right America's sinking economy, but was overwhelmed by the Great Depression. Large scale government programs, like the Hoover Dam, were not enough to turn the economy back towards growth. Hoover was defeated by Franklin D. Roosevelt, who had a more aggressive economic turn-around plan, in a landslide election in 1932.

SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT... TODAY'S COMBATANT KILLED IN ACTION COMMEMORATION:
This day marks a new beginning for the Beacon of Honor - Awakens Our Flag project - one we've been longing to implement since its inception. Beginning today, the first day of school for the Douglas County School District in Colorado, we will commemorate a combatant killed in action within every 'Our Flag's Daily Briefing' write-up. We will hope for and encourage its use within flag ceremonies at schools and well beyond. Thanks to the Military Times' Honor the Fallen database and stories, we will start by honoring combatants killed in action during the current Global War on Terrorism. But, as soon as we find the right information sources and assistance, we'll include KIA from all of America's past combat campaigns. This daily remembrance of our defenders of freedom should make a positive impression on our citizens, especially student citizens, who while stating the Pledge of Allegiance or singing the Star-Spangled Banner can now envision a specific person each day whose story of sacrifice for our freedoms is reflected within the American Flag. This patriotic content is an integral part of our plan to help make the Pledge and Anthem more meaningful and engaging to citizens, especially student citizens - many of whom treat the Pledge of Allegiance as a daily monotonous and meaningless chore.
And, now, we're also preparing to assign and enable a unique public memorial at every 'Beacon of Honored' American Flag. As soon as we're finished testing the new PlaceApp and its geo-location software, we'll be able to ensure those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country are truly 'never forgotten.' No longer will their legacy be kept only in a cemetery, display case in a home, or unknown webpage out of the sight of most citizens. Instead, their informative and inspiring life stories will be on full display, easy to access, for every citizen passing nearby an 'awakened' U.S. Flag. As we deploy our Beacon of Honor - Awakens Our Flag service to U.S. Flags at schools, businesses, homes, and landmarks across the USA, each and every 'awakened' flag will have a unique 'Combatant Killed in Action (KIA) Commemoration,' a public memorial of sorts, enabled within it. So, citizens will encounter a different story of military heroism at each and every 'Beacon of Honored' American Flag they encounter.
