Across the USA, Our Flag flies at full staff, except in 2 states.  In Texas, Our Flag at half-staff honors the life of former Governor Mark White, who served from 1983 to 1987.  And, in North Carolina, the half-staff commemorates the two 82nd Airborne soldiers killed during a suicide bombing of a NATO convoy - U.S. Army Sgt Jonathan Hunter and Specialist Christopher Harris.

The Purple Heart military decoration [public domain image]

Today is 'Purple Heart Day'.  On this date, August 7th, in 1782, Continental Army General George Washington, established the 'Badge of Military Merit' which was redesigned and renamed the Purple Heart after World War II.  The Purple Heart is the oldest military decoration and is awarded in the name of the President to those wounded or killed while serving in battle.
