TODAY'S REMINDER FROM OUR FLAG:
... the land of the free because of the brave ...

On July 27th of 1953, the Korean War ended with the signing of an armistice by the United States, China, and North Korea.  South Korea did not sign, but pledged to maintain the peace.  Since that time, there have been lots of tense moments due to North Korea showing-off its military power during weapons demonstrations.  But, overall, the peace has been maintained so far.

Today, we individually remember and honor, the 14th of 16 service members killed in the KC-130 crash on July 10th, U.S. Marine Gunnery Sergeant Mark Hopkins of Chesapeake, Virginia.  He was designated as a Tactical Systems Operator for the crew of the KC-130 during his 16-year career.

Gunnery Sgt. Mark Hopkins was a devoted Christian who joined the Marine Corps a week before 9/11 and was referred to as "Hoppy" by his fellow Marines.  According to high school classmates, he had an infectious smile and warm spirit that made it worthwhile to be at Great Bridge High School.

We thank and honor Gunnery Sergeant Mark Hopkins, who leaves behind his wife, Patricia, and 3 young children, for defending our freedoms at home and abroad.
