Flanigan's U.S. History Moment to Remember

What is the one-word term that describes turning over more of the Vietnam War efforts to the South Vietnam Army?

On this day, May 10th of 1969, the infamous, 10-day long Battle of Hamburger Hill began.  Even though, the Hill was of little strategic value, US military leaders called for and kept repeating a frontal assault directly at the entrenched enemy that resulted in a very high casualty rate for American forces.  This questionable battle was documented by Life magazine in an edition entitled “The Faces of the American Dead in Vietnam - One Week’s Toll”.  This Battle of Hamburger Hill, along with other costly battles, prompted American military leaders to start a policy of “Vietnamization” of the war - turning over primary responsibility of the conflict fighting to the South Vietnamese.

Why does this matter today?
The process of turning over the war’s primary responsibility to homeland forces, in this case South Vietnam’s, is a policy that continues today in places like Iraq - where US Armed Forces now serve as trainers and advisors to the Iraqi Army.
