Flanigan's U.S. History Moment to Remember
Two of the most well-known Nazi concentration camps were Auschwitz and _______. Can you name the second camp - which was the first camp opened in Germany, had about 100 satellite camps in the southern, Bavaria, part of Germany, and just before liberation forced around 7,000 prisoners on a death march from its camp toward Austria to try and hide the prisoners and Nazi atrocities committed against them.
On April 29 of 1945, the Dachau concentration camp and its satellite camps, which forced prisoners to work on German war munitions and armament, were liberated by U.S. troops. Approximately, 30,000 prisoners were freed - mostly Jews and political prisoners from Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Austria. Three days later, Americans found and freed the Dachau death march prisoners - about 6,000 were found alive near the Austrian border.
[Note: Holocaust survivor and educator, Jack Adler, who gives a presentation to MVHS Sophomore English Honors classes each year, was a survivor of both the Auschwitz and Dachau concentration camps. He was also one of the 6,000 liberated during the Dachau death march. Here’s a link to some of his story.]

Why does this matter today?
The evidence found at Dachau and other Nazi concentration camps led to the Nuremberg Trials - where Nazi SS soldiers were prosecuted for participating in the Holocaust and other war crimes. These trials, and the international laws that came from them, built the basis of our modern-day international laws, trials, and court system.
