On this date, October 12, in 1492, Columbus set foot upon the continent of America. Columbus Day was established to remember and celebrate the discovery of America - known as the New World back then.
Also, upon this date, October 12, in 1892, the Pledge of Allegiance was first recited by students at U.S. schools to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Columbus' arrival.
