Happy Birthday, Defence of Fort McHenry (aka __ ____ _____)
Happy Birthday, Defence of Fort McHenry (aka __ ____ _____)
On this date, on the morning of September 14, 1814, Francis Scott Key, being held as a prisoner on a British ship off-shore, finished watching the 25-hour British Navy bombardment of Fort McHenry near Baltimore, MD. He was amazed to see "that star-spangled banner yet wave" after a night full of "the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air." The sight of the 15-starred U.S. Flag still flying meant that American troops had successfully defended their fort and Baltimore. This event inspired him to write a poem, called the "Defence of Fort McHenry" (shown above), that was later put to music and became "The Star-Spangled Banner." (aka our "National Anthem"
