Today's Story from Our Flag
On this date, October 8, in 1890, Eddie Rickenbacker was born in Columbus, Ohio. He became a World War I "Ace" pilot. An "ace" is a pilot who has shot down 5 or more enemy aircraft in combat. During WWI, he shot down 26 German aircraft to become America's leading ace. For his flying heroics and achievements, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross a record 8 times (he's wearing it in the pic below). One of the awards was converted / upgraded to a Medal of Honor - the U.S. military's highest award for bravery.
After the war, he got into auto racing and led Eastern Air Lines for 19 years.
