THIS WEEK'S HISTORICAL REMINDER FROM OUR FLAG:
... recognizes a pioneering military unit
THIS WEEK'S HISTORICAL REMINDER FROM OUR FLAG:
... recognizes a pioneering military unit
During this week, on May 28th in 1863, the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, becomes the first African-American regiment to depart for combat against the Confederate Army. Finally, after 2 years of pleading to President Lincoln, by men like Frederick Douglass, African-Americans were going to fight for their freedom. The most famous fighting by the 54th Infantry was at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner in South Carolina on July 18, 1863. This battle was the basis for the 1989, Academy Award-nominated, movie Glory. It also produced the first African-American Medal of Honor heroics when Sergeant William Harvey Carney recovered the unit's falling US Flag and led the charge upon the fortress walls with Old Glory clenched between his hands.
[ Clip from movie, Glory, for viewing after Pre-Pledge Tribute (screen for age appropriateness= PG13) ]
