How did MO get its name?:
The state of Missouri is named after the Missouri River - which was the name of an indigenous (Native America) tribe in the area. In there language, the Siouan language, Missouri, pronounced "Maya Sunni" supposedly translated to "it connects to the side of it" - referring to the river.

Notable MO Landmarks and Historic Sites:
1) The Gateway Arch and Old Courthouse
- on the west, St. Louis, side of the Mississippi, is a memorial to all the pioneers who passed through this area, the Gateway to the West. If you book ahead of time, you can ride up to the top of it in these very funky, round, gondola of sorts. Below the Gateway Arch is an engaging museum revealing tons of history on the pioneers going westward. And nearby, one block west, is a National Historic Landmark, the Old Courthouse, which has National Park Ranger tours.
