Today's Historical Moment from Our Flag
... is a 'Military Monday Moment' ...
For this 'Military Monday Moment,' we recall the Second Battle of Fort Wagner on July 18, 1863, yesterday's date.  During this Civil War Union attack on the Confederate held Fort Wagner, the all-black 54th Massachusetts infantry regiment, attempted to overtake the heavily defended fort.  Although, the attack was unsuccessful, the valor shown by these soldiers, especially Sergeant William Harvey Carney (pictured below), boosted America's belief in and recruitment of African-Americans to serve in the Union Army. For the courage he displayed in battle while recovering, leading, and returning the unit's U.S. Flag, Sergeant Carney, earned the Medal of Honor, the first awarded to a black soldier.
