How did WY get its name?:
The name Wyoming was first stated in 1865 when a US Rep. from Ohio introduced a bill to the US Congress to setup a "temporary government for the Territory of Wyoming." The word, Wyoming, comes from the Munsee Native American tribe's word for "at the big river flat" - which was first applied to the Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania.
Nickname of WY:
... No, the official nickname is not the "Cowboy State," it is ...

Notable WY Landmarks and Historic Sites:
1) Devil's Tower
- also known as Bear Lodge Butte, rises nearly 1,300 feet above the Belle Fourche River in northwestern Wyoming. In 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt named it the first US National Monument. It is a sacred place for the Northern Plains Native Americans, who still hold ceremonies today to honor this land and their heritage.
