Today's Historical Moment from Our Flag
[ public domain image = circa 1899 classroom doing Pledge of Allegiance with Bellamy Salute ]
On this date, June 22, in 1942, Congress first recognized the Pledge of Allegiance as an official US Flag ceremony. Public Law 77-623 had changed little since the first and only National Flag Conference in 1923. The Pledge in the 1942 Flag Code, then on its third version from the original Pledge written by Francis Bellamy in 1892, stated:
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
Additionally, the 1942 Flag Code removed the Bellamy Salute, shown in picture above, because it looked too close to the Hitler salute.
