Today's Historical Moment from Our Flag
... recalls Ben Franklin doing something crazy in the name of science ;) ...

Although the date of this famous event is debated, we're going with ...
On this date, June 10th of 1752, Ben Franklin, a bit insanely;), flew a kite during a thunderstorm to prove that lightning was a powerful electric charge.  Franklin spent nearly a decade doing electricity experiments which led to him creating terms we still use today - like battery, conductor, and electrician.  The most significant invention from all his study of electricity was the lightning rod which is installed to protect buildings and ships from powerful lightning strikes.  The rod attracts and grounds lightning
(eliminates the dangerous electric charge by conducting and grounding it safely).

Today's Insightful Quote from Our Flag
... is fittingly about Franklin's electricity experiments, and, as always, includes his strong sense of humor ;) ...

"In going on with these Experiments,
how many pretty systems do we build,
which we soon find ourselves oblig'd to destroy!
If there is no other Use discover'd of Electricity,
this, however, is something considerable,
that it may help to make a vain Man humble."

- Ben Franklin

(Founding Father and inventor of the Lightning Rod)
And, now it's time to ...
Recite the Pledge of Allegiance
Students across America, at school or at home, inspired by one of the many innovations developed by Ben Franklin, let's unite and recite the Pledge.
