Today's Historical Moment from Our Flag
... recalls when German U-boats were in US waters - what?, when? ...
Picture
[ German U-Boat 507 in background / distance = public domain image ]
On this date, May 12th, in 1942, a German U-Boat (submarine), U-507, attacked and sank the SS Virginia, killing 26 sailors aboard the 10,000 ton cargo ship.  The unusual and frightening part of this attack was that it occurred not over in thhe North Atlantic waters near Europe, but at the mouth of the Mississippi River.  Yes, the Germans were in US waters and feasting on unprotected cargo ships.  In total, German U-Boat 507 sank 7 US cargo ships along the shores of Alabama, Florida, and Louisiana during a 2-week spree of surprise attacks.
These attacks scared US citizens who up until then only thought of the battles against the Nazis as being far from our homeland.  The US scrambled to find and sink this U-Boat, but wasn't successful until 6 months later.  The same U-Boat was down in Brazilian waters attacking Brazilian and British cargo ships when a US plane spotted it, drop depth charges on it,  and finally sank U-507.

And, now it's time to ...
Recite the Pledge of Allegiance
Students across America, at school or at home, inspired by America's courage and ability to handle a two-front war, in Europe and the Pacific, during World War II, please unite and recite the Pledge.
