So, who is Horace Mann - the person featured on the stamp above? Well, born on this date, May 4th, in 1796, Horace Mann, is considered by historians to be one of the founders of America's public education system - along with Catherine Beecher (pictured below) and Henry Barnard. Mann served as Massachusetts' first Secretary (leader) of the Massachusetts Board of Education. And, it was here that his focused efforts developed a tax-supported public education system that had a strong force of professionally trained female teachers in his state and was copied and put in place in many other northern states.
National Teacher Appreciation Day (aka National Teachers Day) came to the forefront thanks to Eleanor Roosevelt convincing Congress to proclaim National Teachers Day in 1953. Then, in 1985, the National PTA (Parent Teacher Association) created Teacher Appreciation Week as the first full week in May. And, the National Education Association moved National Teacher Appreciation Day to the first Tuesday in May.
So, make sure you properly, in your own personal way, thank your teachers this week.

Today's Fun from Our Flag
... shares a few, corny kid jokes about teachers ;) ...
Jack, the teacher, asked, Diane, the student, "What would you get if 5 students gave you $20 each?"
Student Diane, quickly answered, with a smile, "I would get a new tablet."
;) :) ;)

Student Diane then asked, Jack, the teacher, "What is common between you, an English teacher, and a court judge?"
Jack, sighed with no reply.
So, Diane told him, "The judge hands out sentences and so do you for homework."
