How did MD get its name?:
Maryland was named in honor of England's Queen Mary. She was the wife of English King Charles I. In 1632, King Charles I gave Lord Baltimore permission to go to America and set-up a colony so long as he named it after his wife, Henrietta Maria of France (aka Queen Mary). First established to help Catholics escape persecution in England, Lord Baltimore made sure this colony was open and accepting of all religions - unlike the earlier Pilgrim and Puritan settlements set-up in early America.
Nickname of MD:
The 'Old Line State'
