Today's Historical Moment from Our Flag

... recalls a barrier-breaking moment for the US Congress ...
I doubt you've ever heard of Hiram Rhodes Revels. During the Reconstruction era of America (reuniting and rebuilding of America after the Civil War), on this date, February 25th in 1870, Hiram Rhodes Revels was sworn-in to serve as a US Senator for the state of Mississippi. He was the first African-American to serve in the US Congress.
Interestingly, he served in the Union Army, with the "United States Colored Troops," as a Chaplain (religious leader) during the Civil War. So, just 5 years before he started representing the people of Mississippi, he was serving with those fighting the southerns trying to stop them from splitting from the United States. And, even more amazing was that Hiram Rhodes Revels basically replaced Jefferson Davis in the US Senate - as Davis was the US Senator for Mississippi when that state seceded (separated) from the United States to become part of the Confederate States because they didn't want to give black slaves their freedom.

Today's Insightful Quote from Our Flag
"I am true to my own race.
I wish to see all done that can be done for their encouragement,
to assist them in acquiring property,
in becoming intelligent, enlightened, useful, valuable citizens."
