Today's Historical Moment from Our Flag
... is Mardi Gras?! What is that? ...

'Mardi Gras' is a French term that translates to 'Fat Tuesday' in English. Mardi Gras was first celebrated in America in 1699 about 60 miles south of New Orleans. The celebration, usually a moving carnival (parade), comes from French and Spanish Catholic traditions that were brought over by colonial settlers. Fat Tuesday, the day before Catholics begin 40 days of fasting on Ash Wednesday, is not a holiday or tradition observed officially by the United States. But, over the years, it has grown significantly outside of its religious basis and beyond its original city celebrations in the southeastern cities of Mobile, AL, Biloxi, MS, Pensacola, FL, and of course, the most famous, New Orleans, LA.

The first Mardi Gras black krewe, parade members dancing with cowbells and garden tools, was established in 1938 in Mobile, AL, and was named the Knights of May Zulu.

Today's Interesting Quote from Our Flag
"I think that I may say that
an American has not seen the United States
until he (she) has seen Mardi-Gras in New Orleans."
— Mark Twain
